what you bring to the table

A food-themed group show I curated.

Slip Gallery, 2301 1st Ave Seattle, WA 98121

September 13 - October 5, 2024

Artists

Gina Ariko, Lauren Bayer Echevarria, Claire Donaldson, Dawn Hubbard, Yaminee Patel, Marina San Miguel, Rich Stevens, Alaina Stocker, Emily Wamsley, Rya Wu, Alana O. Rogers Dance Company

Curatorial statement

Welcome to an exploration of what artists bring to the table, figuratively and literally. Food is a universal human experience, but it’s also a deeply personal one, which is why I find it fascinating as a focus of artistic scrutiny. In this show you’ll find food-themed art that intersects with topics like basic needs, relationships, memories, culture, ritual, routine, value, and expectations of self and others. The artists have worked together to create an atmosphere that mimics the exchange of meals and the community that surrounds it. Please pull up a chair and join us.

The Wheel

A collaborative show featuring my Pride Skull Series and Claire Donaldson’s chicken tarot card major arcana originals.

Slide Gallery, 2307 1st Ave, Seattle, WA 98121

October 12 - November 3, 2023

Show Statement

October sits at the peak of a well-loved seasonal shift here in Seattle, and it’s particularly well suited to the themes of our show. The Wheel is a representation of life and death. With both of our work we aim to celebrate the connection between those two things, albeit in very different ways.

At the center of my work is the theme of connection. The skulls painted to celebrate Pride month (click to view full series) move through the color wheel. In this way they not only carry with them the symbolic weight behind each hue, but they maintain the heavy reality we all have in common: memento mori, meaning "remember that you will die".

Claire’s work is part of an ongoing chicken tarot card project, with the original paintings of the major arcana cards being included in the show. She aims to illustrate the vibrancy of a chicken's life while honoring its fragility. Tarot readings often prescribe balance and self reflection, making them an ideal pairing with the challenges that come with taking care of chickens.

Body of Work: Exploring Nature, Home, and Mortality

Labour Temple (Reading and Card Rooms), 2800 1st Ave Seattle, WA

August 1 - September 10, 2023

Show Statement

All of my pieces begin with a collection of sorts, whether that’s scouring a beach for objects to use in sculpture, deciding which foods pair together in interesting shapes and colors, or sifting through stories to tell. I often choose to depict things that are useful to humans as ritual-building, routine-seeking creatures, and in contemplating these objects I find myself thinking of home. I feel the most at home in rooms like these at the Labour Temple: places where people are meant to gather, with walls that are not stark gallery-white and void of any other personality. I hope that viewers see their own stories in my contemplations of mortality, human relationship, nature, women’s roles, usefulness, etc. And, I hope that my pieces serve to help others make a home, fulfilling their purpose as observer and observed.
